Taming the Giants: Removing a Row of Overgrown Leylandii in Stones Green

At Dedham Vale Tree Surgery, we recently completed a significant project in Stones Green, just over the border from our home base in the heart of the Dedham Vale. The job involved the removal of a long row of overgrown Leylandii cypress trees – a common issue we encounter across Suffolk and Essex.

This type of tree, while fast-growing and popular for privacy, can become problematic if not regularly maintained. Left unchecked, Leylandii can tower well beyond their intended height, overshadowing gardens, blocking out light, and even causing disputes between neighbours. That was the case in Stones Green, where our client had inherited a line of these giants stretching across their property boundary.

Assessing the Task

The Leylandii had reached an excessive height and density, posing not only a visual and physical nuisance but also creating potential risks from windthrow and branch failure. Our client wanted a full removal to open up their garden, allow in more light, and reduce long-term maintenance concerns.

After an on-site survey, we recommended complete removal of the row, which stretched over 50 metres. With our experienced team and a fleet of top-end equipment, we were confident we could complete the job swiftly, safely, and with minimal disruption.

Our Equipment in Action

For this job, we put our new Bandit 12XP Intimidator wood chipper through its paces. This powerhouse of a machine makes light work of dense conifer material like Leylandii, producing clean, compact wood chip that’s easily transportable and perfect for repurposing.

We also brought in our CAT 302.7 digger to help with lifting, clearing, and moving heavier trunk sections safely and efficiently. The CAT proved invaluable in speeding up the process, especially in manoeuvring material to our chipper and loading the log lorry.

Of course, no tree surgery job would be complete without our trusty Stihl chainsaws – a staple of our kit. Their reliability and cutting performance meant we could dismantle the trees quickly while maintaining full control, especially important when working close to property boundaries and garden structures.

The Results: Same-Day Turnaround

Thanks to good planning, the right tools, and a highly capable crew, the entire job was completed in one working day. That’s not something we say lightly – Leylandii can be a real challenge due to the volume of material they produce.

In total, we removed:

  • 12 tonnes of wood chip
  • 16 tonnes of logs

All waste was processed and removed from the site the same day, leaving the property clean, tidy, and ready for the client’s future landscaping plans. The transformation was immediate – the driveway was brighter, more open, and significantly more usable.

Why Professional Removal Matters

While Leylandii trees are often planted with good intentions, their growth rate means they can quickly become unmanageable. Attempting to remove them without the right equipment or experience can be time-consuming and dangerous.

At Dedham Vale Tree Surgery, we bring more than just tools to the job – we bring knowledge, care, and a commitment to doing things the right way. We work cleanly and safely, with full insurance and a team trained to industry standards.
