Large Oak Tree Removal in Holbrook – Managing Acute Oak Decline

Cherry picker being used to carry out tree removal in Suffolk

We recently completed a large oak tree removal in Holbrook after the tree was diagnosed with Acute Oak Decline (AOD). Oaks are an iconic part of the British landscape, so removing one is never a decision taken lightly, especially when the tree has a tree preservation order (TPO) on it . However, in this case, the health and safety risks made removal the only responsible option.

What is Acute Oak Decline?

Acute Oak Decline is a serious condition affecting mature oak trees across the UK. It can cause rapid deterioration, structural weakness, and eventual death of the tree. Common signs include:

  • Bleeding lesions on the trunk 🌳
  • Cracks in the bark
  • Crown dieback and poor leaf growth
  • Increased risk of limb or whole-tree failure

When left unmanaged, affected oaks can become dangerous, particularly in built-up or roadside locations like this one in Holbrook.

The Scope of Works

This was a large-scale oak removal, requiring careful planning, experienced arborists, and specialist machinery to ensure the job was carried out safely and efficiently.

To complete the work, we used:

  • 🪜 CTE 23m cherry picker – providing safe access to the upper canopy
  • 🪵 Bandit 12XP wood chipper – for efficient processing of timber and brash
  • ⛏️ CAT 302.7 ARB digger – for handling heavy sections and site clearance
  • 🚜 John Deere tractor – to extract and transport large oak logs

This combination of equipment allowed us to dismantle the tree in a controlled manner, minimise disruption, and leave the site clean and tidy.

Why Professional Tree Removal Matters

Large oak trees require specialist knowledge and equipment. Attempting removal without professional support can be extremely dangerous. Our team ensured:

  • Safe sectional dismantling of the oak
  • Protection of surrounding property and ground
  • Efficient removal of timber and waste
  • Full compliance with best arboricultural practices
