At Dedham Vale Tree Surgery, we are proud to support organisations that care for some of the UK’s most valued landscapes. Recently we carried out a range of tree management works for the National Trust at a site in Bury St Edmunds, focusing on improving safety within a car park area while maintaining the health and structure of the surrounding trees. The project involved crown reductions, tree removals, and management of trees affected by early signs of disease, all while working around protected trees and listed buildings.
Working on Protected Trees and Historic Buildings
As with many National Trust locations, the site includes protected trees and historic buildings, meaning that any arboricultural work must be carefully planned and carried out in accordance with local regulations.
Several of the trees involved in this project were covered by Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs). Prior to any work commencing, permission was obtained through the local council, ensuring that all proposed operations complied with the relevant planning and conservation requirements.
In addition, the surrounding listed buildings required particular care and consideration during the works. Detailed risk assessments and method planning were carried out to ensure that all tree surgery operations were completed safely, with full respect for the historic structures and their surroundings.
Tree Surgery Works Completed on Site
Tree Line Management Along the Car Park
One of the main tasks involved managing a line of trees running along the car park boundary. The goal here was to maintain clearance from vehicles and structures while retaining the natural appearance of the trees.
The work included:
- Cherry tree – Crown reduced by approximately 30% and crown lifted to increase clearance.
- Cypress tree – Reduced by approximately 8 metres and carefully faced back to the wall line.
- Holly trees – Reduced to match the height and line of the surrounding trees and shaped back from the wall.
- Two smaller Laurel trees – Removed completely to improve spacing and long-term management of the planting line.
These works help ensure that the tree line remains manageable while still providing an attractive boundary to the car park.

Sycamore Removal Due to Early Sooty Bark Disease
In the corner of the car park, we assessed a Sycamore tree that showed early signs of Sooty Bark Disease, a fungal condition that can cause structural weakness and eventual decline.
Due to its position overhanging the car park and the potential risk it posed, the agreed option was to reduce the tree down to just above ground level. This approach removes the hazard while allowing the stump to remain low and unobtrusive.

Crown Lifting Another Sycamore
Another Sycamore required management to improve clearance for vehicles and pedestrian access.
The work carried out included:
- Crown lifting by up to 1.5 metres
- Severing a Wisteria vine that was climbing into the canopy
- Removing the lowest metre of Ivy around the base of the tree
As with the other Sycamore tree on site, this tree is also showing early signs of Sooty Bark Disease, so it will continue to be monitored as part of ongoing site management.

Pseudo Acacia Management
Finally, we addressed two Pseudo Acacia trees close to a wall boundary.
The work involved:
- Complete removal of the tree closest to the wall
- Reducing the neighbouring tree by approximately 2.5 metres
This helps prevent future structural issues with the wall while maintaining the presence of the remaining tre

Professional Tree Care in Any Environment
Working on sites managed by organisations such as the National Trust requires careful planning, communication, safe working practices, and a strong understanding of the surrounding environment. At this site in Bury St Edmunds, every stage of the project had to be carefully planned and carried out with precision. By doing so, our team was able to complete the works efficiently while protecting both the heritage landscape and the safety of visitors.
Projects like this demonstrate our ability to work responsibly in sensitive and protected environments, but the same professional approach applies to all our work. Whether we are managing trees at heritage properties, private homes, commercial sites, estates, or public spaces, our team adapts to the needs of each location.
